PCOS is the number one cause of infertility in the US. What is PCOS? PCOS is a term used by western doctors to describe a condition of infertility that they can not explain. In general women with PCOS do not ovulate and have long cycles and minimal periods. Their ovaries are full of immature eggs that cannot leave the follicle to ovulate and may become cysts. High hormones can be the cause of PCOS or the result. High testosterone levels are reported in PCOS cases which can cause a shift in LH (Lutenizing Hormone) and FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone). All hormones need to be in sync to ovulate, and our body’s ways of maintaining proper hormone levels is a delicate balance.

Morgan Reade, the fertility specialist at NJ Advanced Acupuncture, treats two types of PCOS patients:

over weight and under weight. Over weight patients generally are pre-diabetic or insulin resistant and tend to have hypothyroid and lack energy. Under weight patients generally have low blood sugar or are hypo-glycemic and are always hungry. They may have a hyper thyroid condition. Other common symptoms of both types of PCOS include facial hair, irregular periods, infertility, constipation and acne.

If the body is deficient in hormones then Western doctors can prescribe hormones to bring the levels up. There is no pill that will reduce the amount of hormones in the body. The body has to rid the hormones over time. One Western treatment for PCOS is usually a drug called Metformin that controls blood sugar. Women with PCOS who do not have high blood sugar find this drug ineffective. The focus at NJ Advanced Acupuncture is to treat PCOS naturally.

Treatments at NJ Advanced Acupuncture include Acupuncture, herbs and diet modification along with daily exercise. Patients who follow Morgan Reade’s PCOS program see rapid results usually leading to more regular cycles and fertility.
